In the late 19th century, the Opium Wars in East Asia opened the once-closed ports of China to the trade of international empires and regional powers. As a result, there was a need for a trusted, stable, and interchangeable form of currency for trade in the region. Several nations created their own silver trade dollars, including Imperial Japan. Now, 2023 1 oz Silver Japanese Trade Dollars are available to you for purchase online from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coins ship to you in protective flips!
  • Third issue of the Modern Trade Dollar Series!
  • Mintage limited to 5,000 coins only!
  • Consists of One Troy ounce of .999 fine silver in BU condition.
  • Issued a face value of One Pound by St. Helena.
  • The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II.
  • On the reverse is a Japanese dragon.

The Opium Wars in East Asia during the late 19th century represented a British effort to forcibly open the ports of China to trade from the outside world. By the 1870s, these ports were open to the likes of Britain, France, Japan, and the United States. Several of these powers would issue silver trade dollars.

When it comes to the Japanese trade dollar, the coins were issued from 1875 to 1877 following its introduction in 1874. The coins came at a time when Japan was beginning to open itself up to even greater international trade. The Iwakura Mission from 1871 to 1873 saw Japanese dignitaries and statesmen travel the globe as representatives of the Emperor.

The obverse side of 2023 1 oz Silver Japanese Trade Dollars features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is captured here in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. This portrait was developed in 2015 by Jody Clark and shows the Queen at the age of 89. Following her passing in September 2022, this is the final effigy of the Queen to grace British or Commonwealth coinage.

On the reverse of the new 2023 Silver Japanese Trade Dollar represents a modern take on the historic Japanese trade dollar. This design shows a powerful dragon clutching a pearl orb in its claw as the islands of Japan are featured in the globe in the background.

These 2023 1 oz Silver Japanese Trade Dollar Coins are available to you for purchase in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Each coin is available with a plastic flip and boasts a mintage of just 5,000 in total for this release.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
